Free Family-Friendly May Events
May is one of my favorite months of the year! The spring flowers are blooming, everyone comes out of hibernation, and we begin to realize that summer is drawing near! There are many ways to enjoy the nicer weather. Below is a list of FREE events in the Metro Detroit area.
May 2-5 – Mason’s Spring Fling Festival (Mason) – Visit Mason for sidewalk sales, a 5K event, pancake breakfast, craft show, pie sale, duck race, and more (There may be separate admission costs for some Spring Fling weekend events and programs).
May 3 – Cranbrook Institute of Science – (Bloomfield Hills) – Free admission after 5 p.m. Thanks to the MASCO Corporation Foundation.
May 4 – Free Comic Book Day (Garden City) – A to Z Cards and Comics is giving away free comics. Check out the event page for more information.
May 4 – Belle Isle Conservancy Koi Festival (Detroit) – Head to the Belle Isle Aquarium to celebrate the Japanese heritage of Koi fish. The day will include elements of Japan’s Children’s Day (celebrated on May 5th) with a selection of traditional Japanese games, music, martial arts and more!
May 4, 11, 18, 25 – FREE Day at the Flint Institute of Art (Flint) -Every Saturday is free thanks to Huntington.
May 4, 11, 18, 25 – Saturday in the Park (Hines Drive, Westland) – Every Saturday May-September 28 from 9:00 a.m – 3:30 p.m. Six miles of Hines Drive will be closed from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive for the public of all ages to enjoy running, walking, skating or cycling safely on a traffic free road.
May 11 – Detroit Touch-A-Truck (Detroit) – Touch-a-Truck is a FREE hands-on family event that will provide children with the opportunity to explore large vehicles of all types, including those used by professionals in construction, public safety, transportation, landscaping and other industries.
May 18 – Goldfish Water Safety Day (Canton)- Children and families will receive information about ways to stay safer in and around the water this summer! Goldfish aims to educate families by calling attention to steps we can all take to prevent accidents from occurring. • Water safety presentations • Family swim with professional, certified lifeguards on duty • Kids entertainment • …and more
May 18 – Bicycle Rodeo (Howell) – The Bicycle Rodeo is a safety class designed for children Kindergarten through 5th grades.
May 18 – Royal Oak Kids Day (Royal Oak) – This is a FREE event dedicated to children’s health and safety.
May 18 & 19 – Greater Rochester Heritage Days (Rochester) – Car shows, craft show, Civil War demonstrations, historical displays and demonstrations, food, games, and an old fashioned Baseball game.
May 23 – Kids Komotion Concert Series (West Bloomfield) – Pack a blanket and grab the kids for a free concert at Marshbank Park. Free inflatable fun will be available prior to the entertainment (Make sure to bring socks). The event also features a free “Make & Take Instrument Station” for the first 250 kids.
May 25 – Sensory Friendly Saturday with the Ann Arbor Symphony (Pease Auditorium,Ypsilanti) – “Sensory Friendly Saturday” offers accessible programming opportunities to patrons and their families needing special accommodations. The event starts at 1:30 pm and features a hands-on experience with brass instruments through our Instrument Petting Zoo program. Following the zoo there will be a 30 minute performance by our Brass Quintet! Admission is free with pre-registration. See event page for more details.
May 30 – WOW Thrilling Thursdays (Detroit)– The last Thursday of each month from 6-8 p.m. is free at the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center. FREE programs, fun and games around a specific topic, plus enjoy all the exhibits at the Outdoor Adventure Center!
