Free Family-Friendly October Events
October is here which means Fall is also! The leaves are changing colors and the weather is cooling down. There are free events galore in October…many of which are Halloween related. You can find out about these events in my post, Southeast Michigan Halloween Happenings. Non-Halloween events are listed below. Happy October and Happy Halloween!
Free Family-Friendly October Events
October 3: Mommy & Me Hike (West Bloomfield) – Join the West Bloomfield Park Naturalist on a nature discovery and exercise walk. The trail is unpaved so all-terrain strollers are recommended. Indoor activities will be added if it’s too cold. These events are free but pre-registration is required.
October 4: Family Fun Day at Schwartz’s Greenhouse (Romulus) – Come out to Schwartz’s Greenhouse for their Family Fun Day! Enjoy a host of complimentary kids attractions sure to make them smile including petting zoo, kiddie tractor car racing, bounce house, corn bin, and MORE! Extra activities like pony rides, hay rides, and other premium fun starting at just $5! Plus, enjoy their amazing selection of giant mums, pumpkins & annual baskets to decorate your home for fall!
October 5: Southgate’s 8th Annual Touch A Truck Event (Southgate) – Bring the whole family and come climb, explore and get up close with your favorite vehicles. Fire Trucks, Police Cars, Ambulance, Zambon
October 5: Howl at the Moon (Canton) – Howl at the Moon Dog owners and their pets are encouraged to attend “Howl at the Moon”, a Halloween themed Dog event! Participants along with their four-legged friends can enjoy live entertainment, purchase merchandise, and receive free give-a-ways from local pet supply and service vendors. Come dressed up with your dog, there will be a contest and prizes! Both members of the Dog Park and non-members are encouraged to let their dogs experience this off-leash dog park during the event. This special event is designed to give pet owners the opportunity to learn about the Canton Dog Park, meet other pet owners, and give dogs the opportunity to become more socialized. *Note non-dog park members must show proof of up-to date vaccination for rabies and DHLPP, signed by an accredited veterinarian.
October 5-6: Apple Fest Open House (New Boston) – Crafts and activities for kids, learn some history about apples, sample tasty items made with apples, learn how to make and can applesauce.
October 5-6: Fall Festival at Kensington Metro Park (Milford) – Enjoy a fun-filled weekend of harvest-themed activities for the whole family. Tour the farm and view traditional demonstrations, visit with the food and craft vendors of our Festival Market, and be entertained by Rosco the Clown. The Kensington Living History Village will be open, showcasing early pioneer skills. Make sure to take a horse-drawn hayride to and from the pumpkin patch to pick out the perfect pumpkins for you and your family. Pumpkins and gourds are priced per size. Standard public hayride rates apply.

A Metroparks vehicle entry permit is required to enter any Metropark and is only $35 annually for regular admission, $24 annually for seniors or $10 daily.
October 5, 12, 19, 26: FREE Day at the Flint Institute of Art (Flint) –Every Saturday is free thanks to Huntington.
October 12: WCSX 3rd Annual Bonfire (Taylor) – 3rd Annual WCSX Bonfire! Fun for the whole family! Enjoy beer and hard cider, food, live entertainment, games, kids activities and vendors! Stay for the HUGE BONFIRE to wrap up the evening! Join the entire WCSX crew as they light a 30′ guitar on fire!
October 12: 2019 Annual Fire Safety Open House (Livonia) – Games, Fire Extinguisher Demo, Fire Related Education and so much more.
October 12: PTFD Fire Safety Open House 2019 (Plymouth) – Tour Fire Station 1, check out the trucks and gear the fire fighters use every day. There will be free food and live fire demonstrations. They will also give kids an opportunity to practice talking to 911 dispatchers and meet the police as well.
October 12: Royal Oak Fire Department Open House (Royal Oak) – Royal Oak Fire Department open house from 11am-2pm! There will be a bounce house, cider and donuts, a vehicle extrication (Jaws of Life) demonstration, a stove fire demonstration and many more events to entertain the entire family! Sit in the trucks, spray the hose, meet Sparky the Fire Dog, and learn about fire safety!
October 19: Harvest Festival Crosswinds Marsh (New Boston) – Enjoy a beautiful hayride along a forested trail and gather around the bonfire for kid-friendly stories while enjoying cider and donuts. You can also demonstrate your pumpkin bowling skills, try our fall crafts and games and even participate in a scavenger hunt.
October 19: Fall Festival at Livonia Church of Christ (Livonia) – Games, crafts, a bounce house, cider and donuts, a chili cook-off, hot dogs, and more! This year, The King’s Yomen will be performing at 6 pm, dazzling us with their yo-yo mastery! For families with nut allergies: our goal is for this to be a nut-free event!
October 31: WOW Thrilling Thursdays (Detroit)– The last Thursday of each month from 6-8 p.m. is free at the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center. FREE programs, fun and games around a specific topic, plus enjoy all the exhibits at the Outdoor Adventure Center!
