10 Self-Care Strategies
You can’t always control the circumstances that come your way, but you can control how well you take care of yourself. Taking care of your body, mind, and spirit is important for handling future stress. Implementing the 10 self-care strategies listed below can keep you functioning well, so you are ready for life’s challenges.
- Make sleep a priority – According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults should get 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Also, it’s important to keep a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends.
- Drink more water – Water plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function including proper circulation in the body, removing toxins, regulating the body’s cooling system, and proper digestion and nutrient absorption.
- Exercise on a regular basis – Studies show we should try to get a least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.
- Have a support system – Friends and family who support you and are there when you need them.
- Do what matters to you – Learn to say NO to things you do not want to do. Enjoy your hobbies!
- Pamper yourself – Take time to spoil yourself (manicures, pedicures, baths, etc.)
- Practice gratitude – Learn to appreciate even the littlest things! Recognize, acknowledge and reflect on things that make you grateful.
- Keep your mind sharp – Read, play games, complete puzzles or word games
- Seek serenity – Find ways to relax such as yoga, calming music, candles, a bath, reading the bible, etc.
- Enjoy life – Make life as enjoyable as you can! Find what makes you happy and focus on it. Take trips, spend time with friends and family, get a pet, find a job you love, volunteer…life is short, so make the most of it!
What a great list. I tend not to take good care of myself, but I have been making a more concerted effort lately. Here’s hoping to stay motivated!
Those things seem so basic, but everyone needs to be reminded of them. It is way too easy to get wrapped up in life and forget them all. Thanks for the reminder.
I usually get about 7 hours of sleep per night but I need more. I got about 9 hours each night on my vacation last week and felt better.
You should aim for 9 then. Good for you to know.
This is a great list. Learning to say no was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to learn. I think it’s the moment I started to respect myself.
Great list. I especially like the pamper yourself and have a support system. Those are pretty important and really good to have.
This is so important, I am one of those people who gives and gives and gives until there is nothing else. You can’t give if you don’t first take care of yourself
