Preparing for a mission trip

Preparing for a Mission Trip

This September I will head to Guatemala for my second mission trip. Preparing for a mission trip requires time and planning, especially if you are leaving the country. Be sure to begin your planning early so that everything is in line well before your travel date.

Two Important Must Haves

Of most importance is having an up-to-date passport. Passports are valid for 10 years and must be valid for the duration of your trip. Of second importance is obtaining any necessary vaccinations. You can find information about vaccinations on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website. Some vaccinations need to be given in advance and others need more than one dose, so check the website early.

Packing List

There are some important necessities to pack when going on a trip to another country. Below is a list of things you will want to take with you:

  1. Passport
  2. Drivers license
  3. Medications (prescription, pain relievers, vitamins)
  4. Antibiotic (sometimes suggested when traveling abroad)
  5. Anti-diarrhea medication
  6. Pepto Bismol (in tablet form)
  7. Toiletries
  8. Insect repellent with DEET
  9. Sunscreen
  10. Hand sanitizer
  11. Sunglasses
  12. Hat
  13. Cooling tool and/or a misting fan
  14. Flip flops (for showering)
  15. Work gloves
  16. Comfortable closed toe shoes (such as tennis shoes)
  17. Refillable water bottle
  18. Camera
  19. Fanny pack or backpack
  20. Cell phone and charger

On top of these items, you will need climate and work-related clothing, undergarments, sleepwear, and swim attire.  In some cases, you may need to bring bedding and towels too.
